HTC VIVE

The HTC Vive is a virtual reality headset developed by HTC and Valve Corporation. The headset uses “room scale” tracking technology, allowing the user to move in 3D space and use motion-tracked handheld controllers to interact with the environment.

The HTC Vive was unveiled during HTC’s Mobile World Congress keynote in March 2015. Development kits were sent out in August and September 2015, and the first Consumer version of the device was released on April 5th, 2016.

Oculus Rift

The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset developed and manufactured by Oculus VR, released on 28 March 2016, making it the first to kickstart consumer-targeted virtual reality headsets.

After being founded two months prior, Oculus, as an independent company, proposed a Kickstarter campaign in 2012 to fund the Rift’s development. The project proved successful, raising US$2.5 million from the campaign for the development of the product. In March 2014, Facebook purchased Oculus for $2 billion.

Samsung Gear VR

The Samsung Gear VR is a mobile virtual reality headset developed by Samsung Electronics, in collaboration with Oculus, and manufactured by Samsung. The headset was released on 27 November 2015 and is now available in store or online to purchase.

The Samsung Gear VR makes use of a Samsung Galaxy devices with a gyroscope like the Galaxy S6 or the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. The new Samsung Gear VR Headset works with the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones.

Google Cardboard

Google launched Google Cardboard on June 25, 2014. The Google Cardboard device is a Virtual Reality Headset made from cardboard and optical lenses. The Google Cardboard is a very affordable Virtual Reality Headset that works with your smartphone. Named for its fold-out cardboard viewer, the platform is intended as a low-cost system to encourage interest and development in VR and AR applications. With the launch of Google Cardboard, Google also created the Google Cardboard developers platform for Android and IOS.
